Batch Distillation (Also Known as Batch Rectification).All materials to be separated are added to the distillation tower at one time. During rectification, the distillation still is heated to boiling; the vapor evaporated from the top of the tower is condensed, with part collected as top product and the other part returned to the tower as reflux. At the end of the operation, the residual liquid is discharged from the still all at once, and then the rectification of the next batch of materials is carried out.

Generally, batch distillation has low production capacity, and the concentration of separated materials varies greatly before and after the process. It is similar to the finished product separation in liquor production.

Characteristics of Batch Distillation

(1) The composition of the liquid in the still decreases continuously as rectification proceeds, and the operating parameters (e.g., temperature, concentration) inside the distillation tower also change over time. Therefore, batch distillation is an unsteady-state operation process.
(2) A batch distillation tower has only a rectifying section.
(3) The composition of the top product varies with the operation mode.

Main Operation Modes of Batch Distillation

There are two main operation modes:
  1. Batch distillation with constant distillate composition: The composition of the distillate is kept constant, while the corresponding reflux ratio increases continuously.
  2. Batch distillation with constant reflux ratio: The reflux ratio is kept constant, while the composition of the corresponding distillate decreases gradually.
