Dimethylacetamide (DMAC) can dissolve a variety of compounds and is completely miscible with water, ethers, ketones, esters, etc. It features high thermal stability, resistance to hydrolysis, low corrosivity, and has a wide range of applications. DMAC has good solubility for many resins, especially polyurethane resins and polyimide resins, and is mainly used as a solvent for heat-resistant synthetic fibers, plastic films, coatings, pharmaceuticals, and acrylonitrile spinning.

Overseas, it is mostly used in the production of polyimide films, soluble polyimides, polyimide-perfluoropropylene composite films, polyimide (aluminum) films, soluble polyimide molding powders, etc.; domestically, it is primarily used as an excellent polar solvent for polymer synthetic fiber spinning and other organic syntheses.

In organic synthesis, DMAC acts as an excellent catalyst that can accelerate reactions such as cyclization, halogenation, cyanation, alkylation, and dehydrogenation, while improving the yield of main products. In the production of some pharmaceuticals and pesticides, DMAC can also be used as a solvent or co-catalyst—compared with traditional organic solvents, it enhances both product quality and yield.

DMAC’s industrial production routes are classified by raw materials into three main types:
  1. Acetic anhydride method: Uses acetic anhydride as the raw material, reacting with dimethylamine in the gas phase to produce DMAC. This is currently the main production method in China.
  2. Acetyl chloride method: Produces DMAC by reacting dimethylamine with acetyl chloride. This process adopts advanced catalytic reactive distillation technology, which strengthens the reaction, reduces energy consumption, greatly improves separation efficiency and product yield, simplifies the process, and lowers production costs compared with the acetic anhydride method.
  3. Acetic acid method: Involves the condensation reaction of acetic acid and dimethylamine in the presence of a catalyst. Domestically, catalytic distillation technology has been successfully applied for direct synthesis—reaction heat is utilized, energy consumption during the reaction is reduced, and the process flow is significantly shortened since reaction and distillation are completed in the same equipment.
Additionally, it is worth noting that overseas industrial production of dimethylformamide (DMF) mostly adopts the advanced one-step synthesis method of carbon monoxide/dimethylamine, and a small amount of DMAC is often produced as a byproduct in this process.
